How to Register a SIM in South Korea

A Korean mobile number is useful for everyday activities such as banking, delivery services, transportation apps, online services and identity verification.

1. Choose the Type of SIM

You generally have three options:

  • Prepaid SIM
  • Postpaid mobile plan
  • eSIM

Your best option depends on whether you are a visitor, newly arrived student, or long-term resident.

2. If You Have Not Received Your Residence Card

New arrivals may be able to obtain prepaid mobile service using their passport, depending on the carrier and plan.

For long-term services, however, a Residence Card/ARC is commonly required. Korea's official Working Holiday information specifically notes that the Residence Card is used for activities including purchasing a mobile phone and signing a lease.

3. If You Have a Residence Card

For a regular long-term plan, visit a carrier store with:

  • Passport
  • Residence Card
  • Payment method
  • Phone, if you are bringing your own device

The three major mobile network operators are:

  • SK Telecom
  • KT
  • LG U+

You can also consider an MVNO, commonly called an 알뜰폰 (alteulpon) provider, which may offer lower monthly prices.

4. Make Sure Your Name Matches

When registering a Korean phone number for identity verification, make sure your name is entered exactly as it appears on your official identification.

A phone number that works for calls and data is not necessarily the same as a number that can be used for Korean identity verification.

5. Activate the SIM

The carrier or retailer will activate the SIM and configure your service.

Before leaving the store, test:

  • Calls
  • SMS
  • Mobile data
  • Incoming calls
  • Your Korean phone number

Important

Requirements differ by carrier, plan and immigration status. Confirm the exact documentation with the carrier before purchasing.
